Diagnosis & Treatment of Gastric Cancer |
| |
Since National Cancer Center was designated as a WHO
collaborating center for"treatment and early diagnosis of gastric
cancer"in 1970, we have been publishing WHO-CC newsletters and monographs
on gastric cancer, and have held many international workshops. In
1989, the name of the designation was changed to "WHO collaborating
center for primary prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gastric
cancer", and the area of primary prevention was included through
research on Helicobacter and in molecular biology. Accompanying
the establishment of the International Gastric Cancer Society in
1995, we started academic research in cooperation with this society.
Most physicians in developing nations where there are many patients
with stomach cancer have very limited opportunities to attend this
society's conferences. Therefore, our center's vigorous efforts
are focused mainly on the propagation of knowledge and on upgrading
the levels of the lowest strata of society in these developing nations.

WHO Collaborating Center for Tobacco or Health Programme |
| |
Since National Cancer Center was designated as a WHO
collaborating center for "tobacco or health programme"in 1981, we
have been collecting information concerning smoking and health in
Japan and overseas, and through analysis of the information collected,
we have prepared basic data for smoking control measures. In particular,
we are emphasizing the development of methods for quantitative indication
of the relationship between smoking and its effects on health. In
this way, it will be possible to clarify the future trends of morbidity
and mortality due to smoking, which are likely to continue to worsen
in future, and to estimate the efficacy of smoking control measures.
