Research on methods to provide high school education and practical application thereof for high shool students with cancer

About this study

Issues of adolescents and young adults in continuing their schoolwork and choosing their career path after cancer diagnosis are unique to patients who are high school students. Unlike compulsory education in elementary and junior high schools, high school education has unique issues related to school type (such as public and private), transfer to special needs schools and reinstatement to their former schools, and paucity of high school programs in special needs schools.

In this project, we conducted interviews with patients diagnosed with cancer when they were high school students, their families, and teachers of special needs schools and ordinary high schools, and revealed the current status of learning continuation after the diagnosis and challenges they faced. Based on the findings, we are preparing a guide to support the continuation of high school learning during cancer treatment [Health and Labour Science Research “Research on development and practical application of a mental and psychological support program for adolescent and young adult patients with cancer and methods to provide high school education” Group (Principal investigator Keizo Horibe)].
