October 12th 2018
In Japanese

2Cancer registration trainings were hosted at Phnom Penh, Cambodia from September 5-7 2018 and at Hanoi, Viet Nam from September 18-20 2018, by the National Cancer Center (NCC) Japan, as the Collaborating Center of Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR) of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Dr Tomohiro Matsuda (Head of National Cancer Registry Section, NCC Japan) and Dr Kumiko Saika (Research Scientist of National Cancer Registry Section, NCC Japan) led the group of trainers composed of experts on cancer registration from the Philippines (partner country of e-ASIA Joint Research Program), China and Thailand (Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Cancer Research concluded with its NCC respectively). The group of trainers delivered lectures on the overview of cancer registration, ICD-O3 and CanReg 5 practices, all which are required for the implementation of cancer registration which meets international standards.

The civil war in Cambodia, once completely destroyed its national health system and continued until 1991, but recently the country has shown stable economic growth and is now at the stage of developing legislation leading up to an establishment of cancer registration. Therefore, this cancer registration training attracted much domestic attention. Three television stations covered the training, and the Director General of Calmette Hospital stated during the opening ceremony that cancer registration is a top priority not just for the National Cancer Center of Cambodia, but for the entire Calmette Hospital as well.

In Viet Nam, a Population-Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) is already established in Hanoi and Hồ Chí Minh, thus the training aimed to improve quality of cancer registration and was convened at the K3 campus of Vietnam National Cancer Hospital. Over 50 participants from 9 other PBCRs around the nation gathered and actively participated in the training.
