Science Tokyo and National Cancer Center Japan Sign Basic Collaboration AgreementAccelerating the Social Implementation of Innovative Cancer Diagnostics and Therapeutics through Cutting-Edge Medical-Engineering Integration

Institute of Science Tokyo(Science Tokyo) and the National Cancer Center Japan (NCCJ) signed a basic collaboration agreement at Science Tokyo on August 19, 2026. By combining Science Tokyo's cutting-edge expertise in medical-engineering integration with NCCJ's advanced research infrastructure and extensive track record in clinical development, the agreement aims to accelerate the social implementation of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic technologies toward overcoming cancer.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will make effective use of their respective research resources, personnel, and expertise to pursue innovative technologies and advances in cancer research, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as the social implementation of research outcomes. It establishes an institutional and strategic framework for cooperation that takes the partnership beyond previous project-by-project collaborations.

The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from both institutions. From Science Tokyo, attendees included Naoto Ohtake, President and Chief Executive Officer; Yujiro Tanaka, President and Chief Academic Officer; Mutsuko Hatano, Executive Vice President; Tetsushi Furukawa, Executive Vice President; Yasuhisa Fujii, Executive Vice President; and Yasunari Miyazaki, Hospital Director. Representing NCCJ were Hiroyuki Mano, President; Kazuya Tsuchihara, Executive Director; Toshihiko Doi, Director of the National Cancer Center Hospital East; Noboru Yamamoto, Deputy Director of the National Cancer Center Hospital; and Hiroyoshi Nishikawa, Chief of the Division of Cancer Immunology, National Cancer Center Research Institute. After the heads of the two institutions signed the agreement, the participants exchanged views on the direction of future collaboration.
Scope of Collaboration
Based on this agreement, Science Tokyo and NCCJ will promote collaboration and cooperation in the following areas:
- Joint research and other research-related activities
- Research and personnel exchange
- Mutual support for the development of research personnel and other human resources
- Shared use of research facilities and equipment
Under the agreement, Science Tokyo and NCCJ plan to develop projects in stages, with interdisciplinary medical-engineering integration serving as the core area of collaboration. Beyond this core area, the two institutions will also explore collaboration in a broad range of fields through a Joint Collaboration Promotion Council.
