Introduction

The Division of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy is developing a proton linear accelerator for the boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) in cooperation with Cancer Intelligence Care Systems, Inc. (CICS) and performing nonclinical experiments. Clinical trials are being planned for clinical implementation of accelerator-based BNCT.

Research activities

The proton linear accelerator for BNCT installed in the National Cancer Center Hospital (NCCH) in Tsukiji Campus currently works stably and continuous neutron irradiation up to eight hours has been performing since the autumn of 2016. Currently, 60% of the final specified neutron flux is obtained and the system can be even used clinically. Parallel to the accelerator development, various new instrumentations, including sintered LiF for covering glass dosimeter were developed to measure neutron flux and gamma ray contamination. Using such newly developed instruments, physical evaluation of the neutron fields is under way, with the measurements of neutron flux, neutron spectrum, and field flatness. For launching biological experiments in the neutron area, the extent of radioactivation of mice in the neutron fields was evaluated. The main radionuclide produced in the mice after neutron exposure was Na-24, which turned out to be within the Basic Safety Standards (BSS). Therefore, irradiated mice can be brought out of the controlled area. To elucidate biological property of neutron fields, cell radiation and mice radiation experiments are being performed which will give the relative biological effectiveness of neutrons. Further experiments using boronophenylalanine (BPA) will be performed soon.

Hiroaki Kurihara et al. are developing F-BPA automatic production system. Clinical trial of F-BPA PET/CT was finished with the recruitment of 120 patients, and the property of F-BPA PET was investigated.
