Toshihiko Doi, Keiji Okinaka

Introduction

The mission of the Department of General Internal Medicine is to provide clinical infectious disease consultative service (Table 1). We also focus on the prevention of healthcare associated infections during cancer care.

Our team and what we do

We provided more than 300 infectious disease consultations in 2016. We also promote the practice of hospital infection control (See section "Office of Infection Control and Prevention").

Education

We have planned lectures on infectious diseases for residents at the National Cancer Center Hospital East (NCCHE), the National Cancer Center Hospital (NCCH), and external hospitals. Okinaka also implemented an antimicrobial stewardship program at the Department of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation of the NCCH.

Future prospects

The department of infectious disease is now increasingly being recognized as an important part of cancer centers. Some cancer centers have begun to establish a department for infectious disease. The future goal is to launch an infectious disease fellowship program for residents.
