Introduction

 The Division of BNCT Medical Research is developing a proton linear accelerator for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) in cooperation with Cancer Intelligence Care Systems, Inc. (CICS) and performing nonclinical experiments. Clinical trials are being planned for clinical implementation of accelerator-based BNCT.

Research activities

 The proton linear accelerator for BNCT installed in the National Cancer Center Hospital (NCCH) in the Tsukiji Campus now works stably and continuous neutron irradiation up to eight hours is being performed since the autumn of 2016. Currently, 60% of the final specified neutron flux is obtained and the system can be even used clinically. In this year, preclinical studies of physical as well as biological properties of the system were performed in accordance with the good laboratory practice (GLP) standards to obtain the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) approval.

 Hiroaki Kurihara et al. are developing F-BPA automatic production system. A clinical trial of 18F-BPA PET/CT was finished with recruitment of 120 patients, and the properties of 18F-BPA PET were investigated.
