Practical Research for Innovative Cancer Control Management Office

Yoko Saito, Hiromi Oda, Kyoko Minamoto

Introduction

The Practical Research for Innovative Cancer Control Management Office (PRIMO) has been supporting the program supervisor (PS) and program officer (PO) of the "Practical Research for Innovative Cancer Control" under the supervision of the Division of Cancer Research, the Department of Research Promotion, the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). On the basis of the contract with the AMED, the PRIMO was officially launched in October 2017 as a department independent of other organizations in the National Cancer Center (NCC).

Our team and what we do

  1. Development of a progress management system to support about 200 research and development grants in the "Practical Research for Innovative Cancer Control" project
  2. Development of an AI-assisted research information mapping system to promote the interaction and collaboration among researchers in different fields
  3. Data mining to explore the trends of the state-of-the-art cancer research and development in the world
  4. Consultation and support for the intellectual property and related issues in the "Practical Research for Innovative Cancer Control" research and development
  5. Consultation and support for the ethical, legal and social issues in the "Practical Research for Innovative Cancer Control"

Research activities

We have completed the prototype construction of the progress management system. In addition, oncology clinical trial maps focusing on phase III studies in Japan have been created for 10 types of cancers. A report on cancer research and development trend in the world has been prepared with the help of a contracted think tank. On January 26 and February 27, 2018, the first and second cancer research ethics workshops were held together with another support agency of the AMED, P-CREATE support office.

Future prospects

In fiscal year 2018, along with the full operation of the progress management system, we will assist project management to support progress management of PShPO. In data mining, we will set up an emerging field, investigate international cooperative cancer research trends while utilizing the largest database in the world, and plan to prepare overseas versions of treatment development portfolios. In addition, the research information mapping system is planned to be in operation so that fusion of different fields can be promoted. Including information on intellectual property and ethics, publicize a portal site for citizens, and widely disseminate Japanese research and development trends.
