Introduction

The Division of Prevention has planned and conducted studies on cancer prevention.

Our team and what we do

The Division of Prevention focuses on prevention research to investigate and develop prevention methods (lifestyle, chemoprevention, molecular markers, etc.), risk prediction, risk stratification models, and evidence-based cancer prevention guidelines.

Research activities

1. Evaluation of cancer prevention strategies in Japan and cancer prevention guidelines

To develop an evidence-based cancer prevention strategy in Japan, a systematic review, meta-analysis, pooled analysis of Japanese epidemiological research was conducted.

2.  Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC)

The ACC is a collaborative effort which seeks to understand the relationship between genetics, environmental exposures and the etiology of disease through the establishment of a consortium of cohort studies with healthy individuals throughout Asian countries. Our division serves as the coordinating center and data center of the ACC and directs many of its ongoing projects.

3. The effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication on gastric cancer prevention

This study aims to assess whether H. pylori eradication prevents the subsequent development of gastric cancer by pooled analysis of large-scale epidemiological studies with information on H. pylori infection status (JPHC-NEXT in the Yokote, Saku and Chikusei areas; the Yamagata Cohort; and the Tokyo Gastric Cancer Screening Study). This project started in 2017.

4. Attributable Causes of Cancer (JAPAN PAF PROJECT)

We conducted a systematic assessment to estimate the current burden of cancer attributable to known preventable risk factors in Japan. The first estimation was conducted for cancer incidence and mortality in the year 2005. The estimation is currently being updated for the year 2015.

5. Development of prevention measures based on interventional research.

We have completed a double-blind, randomized clinical trial of aspirin and mesalazine to see if these drugs suppress the occurrence of new adenomas in patients with a history of multiple colorectal adenomas. Now, we are analyzing data for secondary endpoints. Another clinical research project aiming to develop colorectal cancer chemopreventive drugs is in progress.

6. Effectiveness of personalized advice using a cancer risk prediction tool on modifying lifestyle habits: a randomized controlled trial

We started a randomized controlled trial among healthy individuals to evaluate the effectiveness of giving personalized advice. We used a probability calculated by a prediction model of cumulative cancer risk based on lifestyle factors on lifestyle modification. Personalized advice is then compared to standard advice for the prevention of cancer not using risk probability.

7. National survey on access to and use of cancerand health-related information, and cancer risk behaviors

We plan to conduct a nationally representative cross-sectional survey on access to, knowledge of, attitudes towards and use of cancer- and health-related information and cancer risk behaviors in Japan. Randomly selected Japanese people aged 20 years or older will be asked to respond to a self-administered questionnaire by mail.

Education

We have supervised the research of domestic and international Master and PhD students. We serve as Coordinate Department of Cancer Epidemiology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo.

Future prospects

We focus on research for the development of effective cancer prevention strategies. Research to find an effective tool to support behavior modification for promoting health will be planned.
