Introduction

The Division of Screening Technology works as a part of the Screening Research Group in the Center for Public Health Sciences. The Screening Research Group is divided into two divisions (Division of Screening Assessment and Management / Division of Screening Technology). The Division of Screening Technology consists of two staff medical doctors, five special research assistants and one visiting researcher.

The Team and What We Do

In the Division of Screening Technology, we aim to develop new diagnostic techniques that can be applied to cancer screening, as well as researching existing diagnostic methods that can be applied to medical examinations. We are also assessing a new close examination method in cancer screening. In addition, we also work on research aiming at risk stratification of people to be screened.

Research activities

Examinations are ongoing for the cancer detection rate of each screening modality (e.g. Chest CT, upper/lower GI Endoscopy, MMG/Tomosynthesis and Breast Ultrasonography, FDG-PETCT/MRI, CT colonography), the characteristics of the detected cancer, and the false positive rate for all individuals who underwent cancer screening during the 15 years from the establishment our center in 2004. In addition, we aim to clarify the relationship between cancer screening and cancer death from long-term (prognosis survey) results. Moreover, the following research is ongoing: 1) Field construction for verification of diagnostic tools for colorectal cancer and precancerous lesions using biomarkers (Oshima Study), 2) Japan Polyp Study: multicenter prospective cohort study to elucidate the preventive effect of colorectal cancer caused by polypectomy, 3) Development of an endoscope system for early detection of pancreatic cancer, 4) Study on establishment and effectiveness assessment of screening model using colonoscopy (Aomori Project), 5) Multicenter clinical research for accuracy evaluation and standardization of CT colonography, 6) Cost-effectiveness analysis on GI screening and surveillance using endoscope, 7) Prospective study on colorectal cancer risk in first-degree relatives of colorectal cancer patients. In addition, the amino index (AICS) study has received plasma samples from 8,111 screening individuals, and comprehensive amino acid analysis has been completed. Now, the analysis data will be collated with clinical data. Among these, the following six papers were published in this period. 1) Sekiguchi M, Matsuda T, et al., Cost-effectiveness analysis of postpolypectomy colonoscopy surveillance using Japanese data (Dig Endosc. 2019), 2) Sekiguchi M, Matsuda T, et al., Incidence of advanced colorectal neoplasia in individuals with untreated diminutive colorectal adenomas diagnosed by magnifying image-enhanced endoscopy (Am J Gastroenterol 2019), 3) Sekiguchi M, Matsuda T, et al., Feasibility of observational screening colonoscopy followed by deferred polypectomy (J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2020), 4) Sekiguchi M, Matsuda T, et al., Family history of colorectal cancer and prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasia in asymptomatic screened populations in different age groups (Gastrointest Endosc. 2020), 5) Sekiguchi M, Matsuda T, et al., Cost-effectiveness analysis of colorectal cancer screening using colonoscopy, fecal immunochemical test, and risk score (J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2020), 6) Kakinuma R, Matsuda T, et al., Low-dose CT lung cancer screening in never-smokers and smokers: results of an eight-year observational study (Transl Lung Cancer Res 2020).

Other research: We are collaborating with external researchers using 1,325 stool samples collected from the Oshima Study. (Research on colibactin-producing bacteria as fecal biomarkers, bacteria and bacterial flora as fecal biomarkers and their functions). In addition, 26 English articles were published, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and screening of colorectal cancer and gastric cancer.

Future prospects

We will promote screening development research to gather evidence.
