Introduction

 Our main tasks are as follows:

  • Maintain and inspect approximately 5,000 items of medical equipment in the hospital.
  • Assist with the medical equipment operation during surgery.
  • Respond to medical equipment malfunctions.
  • Plan the replacement of medical equipment.

The Team and What We Do

  • 157 cases: Train hospital staff on the safe use of medical equipment.
  • Staff are rotated every week to change the responsibilities of 6 departments (operating room, ICU, central equipment control room, outpatient, endoscopy center, and wards).
  • We are on duty at the hospital to ensure the safe use of medical equipment for those on call from April 2017.

 Clinical support for each department is as follows:

1) Operating room

- 198 cases: prepared for da Vinci system.

- 59 cases: operated neuromonitoring during surgery (SEP, MEP, etc.).

- 9 cases: assisted with radiofrequency ablation therapy.

- 1,801 cases: daily or periodic inspection of endoscopes, shadowless lights, operating tables, electric scalpels, anesthesia equipment, etc.

- 325 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.

- Arranged the equipment to be used for the scheduled surgery.

2) ICU

- 1,204 cases: daily or periodic inspection of ventilators, blood purification equipment, external pacemakers, etc.

- 49 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.

- Worked as Respiratory Support Team (RST).

3) Central equipment management room

 Infusion pumps, syringe pumps, etc.

- 32210 cases: responded to loans, 32084 cases: responded to returns.

- 25241 cases: daily inspection and cleaning.

- 154 cases: regular inspection.

- 1146 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.

4) Ward/outpatient

- Managed the medical equipment installed in each department, such as biometric monitors, defibrillators, AEDs, and electronic blood pressure monitors.

- 3335 cases: daily or periodic inspection.

- 102 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.

 Clinical support was as follows:

- 96 cases: peripheral blood stem cell collection

- 3 cases: bone marrow processing

- 3cases: lymphocyte collection

- Shared information with the doctor in the weekly conference.

5) Endoscope center

- 260 cases: periodic inspection of the endoscope tower.

- 90 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.

Research activities

  • Established a meeting and training system with online tools in the department and improved our work efficiency.
  • Distributed training videos online to the entire hospital so that staff of multiple professions could view them.

Education

  • Prepared an education plan for new employees.
  • Created checklists in each department (including operating rooms, ICUs, central equipment control rooms and wards) and evaluated the results with scores.
  • Focused on trainer training and tested for our job verification.

Future Prospects

  • We will collaborate with other departments as a specialist in medical equipment for cancer care and will perform appropriate medical equipment management.
  • To ensure that medical equipment is used safely, we will plan and actively implement training for our staff who use medical equipment.
