Introduction
The Division of Cohort Research aims to create evidence for preventing cancer and other diseases and extending the healthy life expectancy of Japanese people. To this end, we conduct epidemiological research using a population-based cohort study infrastructure (JPHC Study and JPHC-NEXT Study) and a domestic and international epidemiological research network framework, the National Center Cohort Collaborative for Advancing Population Health (NC-CCAPH).
Research activities
1. National Center Cohort Collaborative for Advancing Population Health (NC-CCAPH) - The collaborative epidemiological research network project of the six national centers (6NC) for advanced and specialized medical care.
The NC-CCAPH is a core research project of the Division of Cohort Research. This project started in 2017. The main aim of the NC-CCAPH is to establish the 6NC Epidemiological Research Collaboration Platform, which will be used to conduct pooled analyses and mutual data analysis through exchange and cooperation among researchers at the six national centers. As part of this project we have established an analysis platform that offers both onsite and remote access with information security protection. We have also launched a working group to make recommendations to extend the healthy life expectancy of Japanese people, based on evidence for comprehensive disease prevention. The recommendation was publicized in February 2021.
2. Promotion of collaborative research among 6NCs using ongoing cohort studies in the NCC.
Using data from the JPHC Study, we have an ongoing study on depression in collaboration with the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry (NCNP) and two ongoing studies on dementia assessed by the long-term care insurance system in collaboration with the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology. In terms of collaborative studies using data from the JPHC-NEXT study, one study proposed by the National Center for Child Health and Development (NCCHD) was accepted by the Journal of Epidemiology. In addition, we newly proposed one research protocol on birth weight, lipid levels, and blood pressure in collaboration with the NCCHD, and have a total of four ongoing studies with the NCCHD.
Concerning the practical use of electronic medical information in cohort studies, we have collected information on health insurance claims and diagnosis procedure combinations (DPC) in the JPHC-NEXT study. In addition, we discussed the validation study for assessing mental disorders (depression, dementia, etc.) using claims data at the collaborative research meeting, and proposed a research protocol.
Regarding the collaborative research among six NCs using ongoing cohort studies, three newly proposed studies were approved at the annual meeting and are collecting data.
3. Japan Public Health Center-based prospective study (JPHC study) / JPHC study for the NEXT generation (JPHC-NEXT)
Follow-up surveys and data analysis of the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective study (JPHC study) with 140,000 local residents as participants have been conducted continuously since 1990. In this study, we reported that adherence to a Japanese diet was associated with a decreased risk of all-cause mortality. Additionally, BMI showed statistically significant positive trends for men and meningioma. A baseline survey for the JPHC study for the NEXT generation (JPHC-NEXT) was completed by the end of 2016, and the 5-year follow-up survey started in 2016 (Table 1). To adapt changes in times, we are adding surveys on heat-not-burn tobacco, and we are conducting surveys on lifestyle changes before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
4. Multicenter observational study on the conditions and factors of coronavirus infections among National Center Staff in Japan
As part of a research project supported by the National Advanced Medical Research Center Medical Research Collaboration Promotion Headquarters, we are participating in a multicenter observational study of new coronavirus infections among staff, which started as a support project of (JH). The National Cancer Center conducted a web-based questionnaire/survey and blood antibody survey on new coronavirus infections for Tsukiji campus staff from February to March 2021 and collected data on approximately 450 people. The survey will be continued until 2022.
Future Prospects
In addition to creating scientific evidence, we will expand and strengthen our research collaboration networks, aiming to extend the healthy life expectancy of Japanese people and promote comprehensive interdisciplinary disease prevention.
