Introduction

 Based on the maintenance of an international network in the field of social medicine, we are involved in setting international standards and rules and in the standardization of research methods. We aim to establish a foundation for international collaborative research by contributing to the improvement of the research level of LMICs.

The Team and What We Do

1. Research on cancer control policies and advocacy of common cancer control measures in Asian countries

 We operate as the secretariat of the Asian National Cancer Center Alliance (ANCCA), with the national cancer centers of 17 member countries, and conduct research and comparative analysis of the progress of cancer care systems and cancer control measures in each country.

2. Development of cancer registries and estimation of cancer incidence in Asian countries

 We are participating in the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR) project to standardize the rules for cancer registry and statistics. In addition, we have concluded an MOU with Vital Strategies to estimate cancer incidence in Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and other countries using statistical models.

3. Estimating the rare cancer burden in Asia and linking it to clinical trials

 In the framework of Rare Cancers Asia, the RARECAREnet Asia project was launched with Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and India to estimate the burden of rare cancers (incidence, survival, and prevalence), including childhood cancers.

4. Clinical research using resident-based cancer statistics as a starting point

 In collaboration with IARC and IKNL, we are conducting a long-term follow-up study of cancer patients starting from population-based cancer registry database.

5. Standardization of childhood cancer stages, estimation of survival rates, and development of statistical infrastructure

 The Toronto Childhood Cancer Staging System, which was proposed by the Cancer Council Queensland in Australia and is recognized as an international standard, has been applied to Japanese data, and a survival analysis (BENCHISTA study) is being conducted in collaboration with Italy and the United Kingdom.

6. Development of a data sharing method without exchanging individual information

 In view of the recent demand for more rigid personal data protection in the world, we are considering shifting to a method of virtual data sharing (Vantage6) without exchanging individual information.

Research activities

 We operated as the secretariat of ANCCA. We surveyed the actual situation of cancer control in each country and started a project to advocate a common cancer control plan in Asia. As part of the GICR project, we promoted a project to develop cancer registration and statistics for Vietnam. In the framework of Rare Cancers Asia, we wrote a paper on survival of rare cancers. We also analyzed the incidence of rare cancers by age group and the disparity between prefectures. We obtained a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, and finalized the details of the research plan with IARC and IKNL in the Netherlands. We conducted a study using the Toronto Childhood Cancer Staging System in cooperation with cancer centers in Tokyo and Osaka, and registered more than 1300 cases.

Education

 We obtained a UICC fellowship and made preparations for a researcher from Sao Paulo, Brazil to visit the NCC for training.

Future Prospects

 Although we have only a small number of members, we aim to pioneer model collaborative research with researchers in other countries, and by demonstrating the results, we would like to link it to research on a larger scale and to domestic and international projects.
