Introduction

From April 2021 to March 2022, we focused on implementing cancer nutrition guidance. This was done as an effort to increase the amount of nutrition guidance and improve quality.

We have established and implemented a system for nutritional guidance by a registered dietitian who has expertise relevant to outpatient chemotherapy patients.

The Team and What We Do

Hospitalized patient meals totaled 334,321 during this period and we gave nutrition guidance to 6,623 persons. Regarding discussions with NST, there were an average of 162 new requests per month (Table 1).

Our long-running cooking classes couldn’t be held as planned due to the COVID-19 infection epidemic.

During this period, we made a leap forward by making a recipe video about our recipe search site “CHEER!”, which we opened in 2019, and posting it on the site. The aim is to help cancer patients and their families manage diet-affecting cancer symptoms.

Research activities

During this period, we conducted research on our profession. It was a survey of the experience and burnout of registered dietitians involved in palliative care. This survey was aimed at registered dietitians at cancer treatment base hospitals in Japan. We spent some time putting together a report on this research.

Education

We have been entrusted with clinical training by four universities.

This was less than usual due to COVID-19.

In human resource development, we have strengthened support so that people can obtain professional qualifications certified by academic societies. This resulted in one person becoming a JSPEN-Certified Nutrition Support Team Specialist Therapist and one becoming a JSMCN-Certified Metabolic and Clinical Registered Dietitian during the period.

Future Prospects

We plan to hold a lot of lectures about local information, the influence of cancer therapy and cancer prevention for a lot of people, and we want to disseminate practical knowhow.

In addition, we will continue to develop nutritional guidance methods and nutritional guidance information tools to improve the quality of nutritional management for inpatients and outpatients.
