The Team and What We Do

To promote Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in the area of supportive, palliative and psychosocial care research, a Stakeholder Coordination Center (SCC) was established and began working with the PPI Committee of the National Federation of Cancer Patient Organizations. By FY2021, PPI from the research planning stage had been attempted for six out of 18 approved research projects. In addition, the PPI committee decided to hold a meeting to discuss the selection of future research projects and how to proceed, and to continue the exchange of opinions. In FY2021, a meeting to report on the results of the approved research projects was held jointly with J-SUPPORT and the National Federation of Cancer Patient Organizations. the meeting reported on the results of the J-SUPPORT1603 and J-SUPPORT1704 approved research projects and discussed matters with patient representatives and a representative of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development under the theme of "Development of Supportive, Palliative and Psychosocial Care with Patients and the Public".

In FY2021, J-SUPPORT provided consultation support for 38 research concepts, including 13 new research concepts. One new trial was approved. Of the six* completed studies, three** were published in FY2021, and J-SUPPORT1602 was adopted by two practice guidelines. In addition, three papers are currently being prepared for submission, two are in the process of tracking the completion of patient enrollment, six are in the process of registration, and one is in the process of preparation.

After the Supportive and Palliative Care Research Policy (general) was published in 2019, three specific topics were followed: 1) dyspnea, 2) mucositis, and 3) chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). In addition, as a concept for the selection of clinical outcome assessment (COA), a Japanese translation of the article on the conceptual basis of COA was prepared and published.

Education

An education and training center was established to share the approved study protocols.

The National Cancer Center Community Health Research Network (N-COMMUNITY) was also established to share research support and educational resources with other research organizations. In FY2021, seven organizations joined N-COMMUNITY.

Ten "Behavioral Science Seminars" were held jointly with the Support and Survivorship Research Group of the National Cancer Center Institution for Cancer Control and the School of Human Sciences of Waseda University, J-SUPPORT, N-EQUITY and RADISH.

Ten "Implementation Science Seminars" were held jointly with the Support and Survivorship Research Group of the National Cancer Center Institution for Cancer Control and N-EQUITY, and co-sponsored by RADISH, J-SUPPORT, and the Faculty of Human Sciences of Waseda University.

Future Prospects

J-SUPPORT will make effort sustainably to support the clinical trials and studies for cancer supportive, palliative, and psychosocial care, as well as patient and public involvement (PPI).
