Introduction
The Division of Prevention has planned and conducted studies on cancer prevention.
The Team and What We Do
The Division of Prevention focuses on prevention research to investigate and develop prevention methods (lifestyle, chemoprevention, molecular markers, etc.), risk prediction, risk stratification models, and evidence-based cancer prevention guidelines.
Research activities
1. Evaluation of cancer prevention strategies in Japan and cancer prevention guidelines
We conducted systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and pooled analyses of Japanese epidemiological research to develop an evidence-based cancer prevention strategy in Japan. Additionally, a booklet for junior and senior high school students was created in collaboration with experts to disseminate the Evidence-based Cancer Prevention Recommendations for Japanese.
2. Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC)
The ACC is a collaborative effort which seeks to understand the relationship between genetics, environmental exposures and the etiology of disease through the establishment of a consortium of cohort studies with healthy individuals throughout Asian countries. Our division serves as the coordinating center and data center of the ACC, and overseas its ongoing projects.
3. The effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication on gastric cancer prevention
This project was initiated in 2017 and aims to assess whether H. pylori eradication prevents the subsequent development of gastric cancer by pooled analysis of large-scale epidemiological studies (JPHC-NEXT in the Yokote, Saku and Chikusei areas; the Yamagata Cohort; and the Tokyo Gastric Cancer Screening Study).
4. Attributable causes of cancer (JAPAN PAF PROJECT)
We conducted a systematic assessment to estimate the current burden of cancer attributable to known preventable risk factors in Japan. The first estimation was conducted for cancer incidence and mortality in the year 2005. The estimation is currently being updated for the year 2015.
5. Asian Code Against Cancer (ACAC Project)
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) launched the World Code Against Cancer Framework in 2022 and supports the development of common regional codes against cancer. Following this framework, the Division of Prevention and Division of International Health Policy Research have started to develop a working group in collaboration with IARC and the Asian National Cancer Centers Alliance (ANCCA).
6. National Center for Advanced Medical Research (NC-CCAPH or 6NC) Cross-sectional Research, Medical Research Collaboration Promotion Headquarters
In collaboration with 6NC, we are utilizing the existing cohort and life log data for predictive preemptive medical care, and conducting antibody surveys for new coronavirus infections among 6NC staff.
Education
We supervised the research of domestic and international Master and PhD students. We serve as Coordinate Department of Cancer Epidemiology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo. We also accepted guest researchers and trainees from overseas.
Future Prospects
We aim to focus on research for the development and assessment of effective cancer prevention strategies.
