G7 Cancer: the 4th Annual Strategic Committee in Lyon and the Presidency Transition Ceremony

June 9, 2026
In Japanese

The fourth Strategic Committee meeting of the G7 Cancer initiative was held in Lyon on May 26, 2026.

Launched in 2023 under the leadership of the Institut National du Cancer (INCa), G7 Cancer has established a robust model for international cooperation in cancer control.

This international framework enters a new phase as the presidency transitions to the National Cancer Center Japan (NCCJ). Under NCCJ’s leadership, together with close and active collaboration among participating institutions, the initiative is poised to evolve into a more open and impactful platform, advancing both research and policy to address cancer on a global scale.

In a symbolic handover, Professor Norbert Ifrah (President, INCa) presented Professor Hiroyuki (Hiro) Mano (President, NCCJ) with a coin engraved with the words “Shared Progress”, in French, English and Japanese. Hiro then added the first eye to a traditional Japanese daruma doll, marking the setting of a shared goal. In Japan, the daruma represents perseverance and commitment: one eye is filled in when a goal is set, and the second is completed upon its achievement.

With this gesture, we have taken the first step into a new phase: united in purpose, and committed to returning in two years to mark our achievement together.
