Project Summary

In Japan, drugs approved by the government can be used under national health insurance, but off-label use is not covered by the insurance. Patient-proposed healthcare services (PPHS) is a system that allows patients to use unapproved or off-label drugs under national health insurance. This system is initiated by the patient’s proposal to use unapproved or off-label drugs, then their doctors plan protocol and submit to the government. Patients can receive the treatment at the nearest hospitals.
BELIEVE Trial (“patient-requested treatment for multiple molecular-targeted therapies based on genetic profiling by cancer gene panel testing (NCCH1901),” jRCTs031190104) is a basket/umbrella-type clinical trial that utilizes the PPHS. It prepares protocol and drugs in advance so that, when patients want to receive off-label drugs, they can access the drugs more promptly and safely.
